Power & Energy Solutions in Sri Lanka: A Sector in Transformation

Sri Lanka’s power and energy sector is undergoing a historic transformation in 2026. The long-standing monopoly of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) officially ended on March 9, 2026, when it was dissolved and replaced by six new state-owned companies. This restructuring is designed to improve efficiency, separate generation from transmission and distribution, and prepare the sector for investment. While the CEB had overseen electricity generation, transmission, and distribution for over 50 years, the new structure divides these responsibilities among:

  • Electricity Generation Lanka (Pvt) Ltd – manages all government-owned power plants
  • National Transmission Network Service Provider (Pvt) Ltd – handles high-voltage transmission
  • National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd – manages system planning and grid stability
  • Electricity Distribution Lanka (Pvt) Ltd – oversees distribution to consumers
  • Energy Ventures Lanka (Pvt) Ltd – handles new energy initiatives
  • CEB Employees’ Fund (Pvt) Ltd – manages employee retirement funds

This restructuring reflects the broader shift toward modernization, efficiency, and sustainability across the sector.

As the largest power generation complex in Sri Lanka, Mahaweli Complex has a generating capacity of 916.7 MW, producing over 2,500 GWh annually. It comprises eight hydro power stations (Victoria, Randenigala, Rantambe, Kothmale, Upper Kothmale, Ukuwela, Bowatenna, Nillambe) and one wind power station (Thambapawani).

The Future: Renewable Energy and Smart Infrastructure

The sector is experiencing a decisive shift toward renewable energy integration, with numerous new solar and mini-hydro projects being licensed by the Public Utilities Commission. Between solar PV and mini-hydro developments, these range from 1 MW to 10 MW in capacity, representing a significant expansion of the renewable energy mix. This trend is complemented by growing adoption of smart monitoring, battery energy storage, and automation technologies that improve grid reliability and efficiency. The restructuring of the CEB into specialized companies is expected to further accelerate private investment and technological advancement across the power and energy sector.
